Moving to Switzerland for Work: First Steps You Should Take

Relocating for work is an exciting opportunity - and Switzerland is one of the most attractive destinations for professionals worldwide. However, moving here requires more than packing your bags. There are key steps to take in the first few weeks to ensure a successful transition.

Securing a place to live is usually a top priority. Rental markets in cities like Zurich, Geneva, and Basel are highly competitive. It's common to apply for multiple apartments before finding one, and many newcomers start with temporary accommodation before securing a long-term lease. Preparing a rental application dossier - including proof of income, a copy of your employment contract, and personal references — can make the process smoother.

Registration is another important step. Anyone moving to Switzerland must register their address at the local municipal office ("Gemeinde" in German-speaking areas) within 14 days of arrival. This step is necessary for obtaining your residence permit, setting up health insurance, and opening a bank account.

Speaking of insurance, health insurance is mandatory in Switzerland. You must choose and register with a private health insurer within three months of arrival, regardless of whether you already have temporary coverage.

Finally, setting up a Swiss bank account will make salary payments and daily life much easier. Many banks offer "expat packages" designed specifically for newcomers to Switzerland.

Taking care of these basics early helps build a strong foundation - allowing you to focus fully on settling into your new professional and personal life.
